Senior Java Engineer-- (Fully Remote | Long-term Contract)

Role overview

Beacon Hill is seeking a Senior Java Engineer for a fully remote, long-term contract supporting a large-scale modernization initiative. You will convert legacy ETL and mainframe-driven backend logic into modern Java services, working in ambiguous, complex environments and mentoring others.

Responsibilities

• Review and refactor existing Java code as part of an ETL-to-Java modernization effort
• Extract and translate legacy ETL/mainframe logic into Java-based services
• Lead and contribute to backend modernization with Principal Engineers and legacy system SMEs
• Define future Java development patterns and backend architecture standards
• Mentor engineers transitioning from legacy/ETL-based development
• Improve consistency, maintainability, and scalability of backend services

Requirements

• Senior-level backend experience with Java (11+)
• Strong experience modernizing legacy systems or rewriting ETL/batch logic
• Demonstrated experience using AI tools in day-to-day development and analysis (including code review/refactoring)
• Comfortable with backend processing pipelines, APIs, and messaging systems
• Ability to work in ambiguous environments with limited documentation
• Strong collaboration and communication skills; proven ability to mentor

Nice to have

• AWS (Lambda, S3) and cloud experience
• OpenShift and/or Argo CD
• Messaging systems experience: Kafka and RabbitMQ
• Mainframe-adjacent experience/tools (e.g., Zowe)
