Senior Engineering Manager

Role Overview

As Senior Engineering Manager at Uplight, you will lead a team of engineers to design, develop, and deploy features for the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform. You’ll work directly on technology that enables grid operators to access flexible, dispatchable capacity at scale.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of ~4–8 engineers, setting clear priorities and expectations.
• Drive engineering delivery: design, development, and deployment of VPP platform features with high-quality outcomes.
• Partner with Product Management to scope and deliver solutions aligned with company goals, balancing technical trade-offs and business needs.
• Promote Agile delivery practices (iterative development, continuous feedback, retrospectives) to improve velocity and product quality.
• Make data-driven decisions to continuously improve software and team performance.
• Engage in technical discussions at system and architecture level; ensure strong system design decisions.

Requirements

• Strong communication skills and ability to set clear expectations/priorities.
• Proven track record driving Agile delivery (iterative development, continuous feedback, retrospectives).
• Empathy for both the team and customers.
• Ability to engage in system/architecture-level technical discussions.
• Prior hands-on engineering experience (designing, building, or testing software).
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or GCP), distributed systems, or modern SaaS architectures.
• Understanding of key reliability/performance fundamentals: cost, uptime, and performance and how to measure/improve them.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience using or building upon Databricks.
• Experience in energy, utilities, grid technology, or climate tech.
