Senior Engineering Manager (Retailer Platform)

Role overview

Instacart is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager for the Enterprise Foundations team within the Retailer Platform. You will lead a team of ~12 engineers and set architectural and integration direction to help Instacart scale across the world’s largest grocers.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage ~12 engineers: set clear architectural/execution direction, develop talent, and foster ownership and continuous improvement.
• Consolidate bespoke retailer-vertical services onto unified Instacart platform “rails” and ensure workstreams converge on shared solutions.
• Drive cross-functional alignment: broker architectural and prioritization trade-offs across multiple engineering and product organizations.
• Partner with ML and Data Engineering on data platform compliance, model training infrastructure, and data isolation initiatives.
• Deliver self-service tooling that supports platform adoption and scalable integration.
• Represent technical and product trade-offs across organizations and maintain alignment with committed work.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing engineering teams delivering platform/infrastructure products in a B2B/enterprise context.
• Experience leading teams of 10+ engineers, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
• Strong cross-functional leadership: influence outcomes across multiple engineering and product organizations, including comfort with structured escalation.
• Proven success in ambiguous, high-growth environments; ability to create clarity and drive forward motion.
• Technical proficiency in distributed systems, API/SDK design, and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
• Experience leading multi-team architectural transitions such as consolidation, replatforming, multi-tenancy, or data isolation in real customer/revenue settings.
• Domain experience in commerce/retail platforms (e.g., omnichannel retail, OMS, POS, catering/connected-store).
• Track record building multi-tenant platforms with per-tenant configuration, isolation, and extensibility.
• Experience scaling enterprise integrations and managing partner-facing technical relationships.

Nice-to-haves

• Direct experience partnering closely with ML/Data Engineering for compliance, training infrastructure, or isolation initiatives.
• Experience leading other engineering managers and growing two-layer organizations.
