Senior DevOps Engineer

Role overview

Senior DevOps Engineer in the Platform Tribe at SumUp’s Cloud Infrastructure team (office-first in Berlin). You will own critical platform services that enable teams to ship safely and quickly, modernize Kubernetes operations at scale, and support engineers building on top of the infrastructure you maintain.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain Terraform modules and reusable infrastructure patterns for other engineering teams
• Operate and improve production Kubernetes on EKS (performance tuning, service mesh implementation)
• Lead security and compliance work across PCI DSS and SOC 2 in partnership with the Security team
• Define and monitor service reliability metrics, participate in on-call, and drive improvements after incidents
• Improve developer experience via automation, better CI/CD pipelines, and clearer documentation
• Mentor engineers and contribute to technical design discussions

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in DevOps, platform, or infrastructure engineering
• Strong hands-on software development background (Go preferred, but acceptable for other languages)
• Proven experience designing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code with Terraform
• Strong production Kubernetes knowledge (cluster operations and troubleshooting)
• Hands-on experience with core AWS services: EC2, VPC, IAM, and load balancing
• Ability to work comfortably within security/compliance requirements
• Ability to mentor others and clearly explain technical decisions to different audiences

Nice to have

• Experience with Kubernetes at scale and reliability improvement initiatives (implied by responsibilities)
• Experience supporting org-wide developer productivity through CI/CD and documentation (implied)
