Role: Senior DevOps Engineer

What’s driving the hire

As Chexology scales, the team needs dedicated infrastructure and operations expertise focused on preventing incidents, reducing alert noise, making deployments routine, and enabling engineers to focus on building.

Responsibilities

• Own and standardize infrastructure
  • Make infrastructure reproducible using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices.
  • Reduce reliance on tribal knowledge and manual console steps.
• Build and mature observability
  • Deliver meaningful dashboards.
  • Implement actionable alerting with low false positives.
  • Improve tracing to find root causes of customer-reported issues quickly.
• Tame background processing
  • Provide UI-based visibility and self-service for job queues (see/retry/clear stuck jobs).
  • Improve queue architecture to prevent slow integrations from starving others.
• Strengthen security posture
  • Lead improvements across secrets management, access controls, and audit logging.
  • Handle dependency and vulnerability management.
  • Help turn enterprise security questionnaires into a routine process and lay groundwork for SOC 2.
  • Answer security/infrastructure questions for clients.
• Own database operations
  • Manage an Aurora MySQL fleet (upgrades, performance, backups, read replicas).
  • Maintain read-only, PII-free schemas for internal tooling and AI workflows.
• Make CI/CD boring and fast
  • Improve build times and reliability.
  • Strengthen review apps and staging with realistic data so QA can test effectively.
  • Keep deployments safe and reversible.
• Improve reliability and incident response
  • Establish lightweight runbooks, on-call practices, and post-incident reviews.
  • Measure and improve uptime for venues running live nightly.
• Control and right-size costs
  • Adjust infrastructure spend as the company scales without sacrificing reliability.
• Hands-on support and occasional app code work
  • Occasionally touch application code (Ruby on Rails), assist with hard customer issues, and participate in support rotation and off-hours maintenance.

90-day plan (first milestones)

• Month 1: Learn systems end-to-end, take customer-support shifts, and ship one quick win (e.g., self-service tooling for Client Success).
• Month 2: Stand up baseline alerting and dashboards; own an infrastructure upgrade or CI reliability project.
• Month 3: Deliver a concrete security-hardening milestone (e.g., audit logging) that materially improves enterprise questionnaire responses.

Requirements

• 5+ years in DevOps/SRE/platform/infrastructure with ownership of production systems serving live customers.
• Deep, hands-on experience with AWS (including Aurora MySQL and S3).
• Experience with a PaaS deployment model (Heroku today).
• Strong CI/CD experience (CircleCI).
• Solid observability expertise (monitoring/alerting/tracing that people trust).
• Database operations experience: upgrades, performance tuning, backups, replication.
• MySQL/Aurora experience preferred.
• Strong security instincts: secrets management, access control, and vulnerability management.

Nice-to-haves (implied by the work)

• Experience implementing low-noise alerting and end-to-end trace-driven debugging.
• Experience with SOC 2 readiness or security compliance programs.
• Experience improving queue/job-queue UX and self-service operational tooling.
