Senior Data Engineer

Role Overview

Join Thumbtack as a Senior Data Engineer in a virtual-first (full remote) environment. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to build and maintain core operations datasets, data marts, and feature stores, while driving data quality and helping develop next-generation AI-enabled data products.

Key Missions

• Refine and evangelize a framework that integrates data thinking into the software development lifecycle for product teams.
• Design, architect, and maintain core operations datasets, data marts, and feature stores supporting both mature and evolving products.
• Drive data quality and best practices across business areas.
• Build next-generation data products leveraging AI models (including AI-assisted code generation/workflows).

Responsibilities

• Own the work end-to-end (from ideation/requirements gathering to delivery and ongoing maintenance).
• Architect data solutions that stitch together data from:
  • Production databases
  • Clickstream data
  • External APIs
• Build SQL- and Python-based transforms within an ETL pipeline.
• Partner closely with stakeholders (especially Analytics) to improve processes across teams.

Requirements

• 4+ years designing and building datasets and warehouses.
• Experience designing/maintaining a data warehouse and data marts.
• Expertise with a cloud-native data stack (Thumbtack uses BigQuery, dbt, and Apache Airflow, but similar stacks are acceptable).
• Strong SQL skills for analytics/reporting/BI and for building transforms in ETL pipelines.
• Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to identify improvement opportunities.

• Experience using AI to generate design plans, code, and documentation.
• Applying AI-enabled workflows to accelerate development velocity and improve data engineering practices.
