Senior Data Engineer - Athlete (REMOTE)

Role overview

You’ll join the Athlete Data team to build and evolve the data foundation that supports personalized customer experiences, loyalty programs, and marketing insights. This Senior Data Engineer role focuses on turning ambiguous business problems into well-structured, executable data pipelines and models—especially where sensitive customer data, identity resolution, and source unification are involved.

Responsibilities

• Build high-quality data pipelines using SQL and Python on Databricks/Spark (or similar), modernizing existing pipelines for performance, clarity, and maintainability.
• Add trust-building practices including tests, documentation, data lineage, and observability.
• Model data across multiple systems by translating complex multi-source schemas into clear conceptual and physical models, handling grain alignment and key logic.
• Protect customer data with privacy-first patterns and disciplined data hygiene; safely handle sensitive data per organizational standards.
• Collaborate across teams and partners, including analytics, engineering, marketing, product managers, data scientists, and vendor teams—communicating assumptions and trade-offs clearly.
• Lift the team through knowledge sharing, meaningful documentation, code reviews, pairing, and using AI-assisted tools to accelerate documentation and test generation.

Requirements

• Strong SQL and Python fundamentals.
• Experience with Databricks/Spark (or similar large-scale platforms).
• Ability to think clearly about data models and transformations.
• Detail-oriented, disciplined data hygiene.
• Ability to break down complex problems and communicate them clearly.
• Curiosity and willingness to learn quickly; strong team-first mindset.

Nice to haves

• Experience with refactoring, data governance/cataloging.
• Experience with agile development.
