Senior Cloud Database Engineer

Role Overview

Join Marqeta as a Senior Cloud Database Engineer. You’ll automate the lifecycle of AWS Aurora databases, analyze performance, and help build next-generation database solutions while partnering with application teams.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

• Automate the lifecycle of AWS Aurora instances and support database fleet management
• Work with application teams to analyze database performance and drive improvements
• Contribute to the technical vision for database engineering, including maintenance and cloud migration for relational and non-relational databases
• Mentor junior engineers and help define team standards
• Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation supporting services owned by Database Engineering
• Support high availability, disaster recovery, and distributed systems work
• Perform logical/physical migrations and blue-green switchovers

Requirements

• Strong ownership and proactive issue-raising/accountability
• Monitoring/observability experience, with Datadog preferred
• Experience with cloud-native databases (AWS preferred):
  • Transactional RDBMS: Aurora, MySQL, Postgres
  • NoSQL: DynamoDB and/or MongoDB
• Python proficiency
• Solid database administration fundamentals: internals, query tuning, indexing, performance metrics
• Experience with IaaC and automation/orchestration (e.g., Terraform, AWS Step Functions)
• Linux command-line and shell scripting
• CI/CD experience (pipelines, job runners, deployment automation)
• 5+ years as a backend engineer (or 7+ years relevant experience if no degree)
• Ability to work cross-functionally and a strong commitment to continuous learning

Nice-to-haves

• AI tooling fluency
• High availability / disaster recovery / replication & failover expertise
• ProxySQL and/or RDS Proxy experience
• Payments/FinTech domain experience
• Basics in Java
