Senior Backend VPP Software Engineer

Role overview

Join 1Komma5° as a Senior Backend VPP Software Engineer. You will build scalable backend services that enable seamless integration of energy management solutions with multiple energy markets. You’ll collaborate with product managers, data engineers, and data scientists to deliver solutions customers love, working either in new offices (Hamburg/Berlin) or remotely.

Key missions

• Develop scalable and robust backend services for integrating energy management solutions into different energy markets.
• Collaborate with product, data engineering, and data science teams to support discovery and solution creation.
• Design and implement APIs and abstraction layers to enable communication between components.

Requirements

• Strong written and spoken English; German is a plus.
• Agile, product-oriented mindset and strong teamwork.
• Competence in Virtual Power Plant (VPP) infrastructure, including integration with energy markets (e.g., day-ahead, intraday, balancing services).
• Proven experience building scalable backend solutions with TypeScript.
• Awareness of software engineering trends and industry best practices.
• Broad knowledge of architectural patterns and experience implementing them with CI/CD using GitHub Actions and cloud infrastructure (ideally GCP).
• Hands-on experience with interfaces in energy services (e.g., smart meters, energy optimization, load balancing).
• Passion for maintainable, documented, reusable, testable code.
• IaC experience, ideally Terraform.
• Experience with Python in data engineering or machine learning contexts.
• Experience with IoT applications for grid balancing and demand response.

Nice-to-haves / additional signals

• German language skills.
• Cloud experience beyond GCP is not required but GCP is preferred.
