Senior Backend Software Engineer (USA Remote)

Role Overview

Senior Backend Software Engineer supporting Turnitin’s Assignment Workflow backend capabilities. You’ll build and evolve scalable backend systems and partner with frontend, design, and product teams to deliver solutions for educators and students globally.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend services
• Build and evolve backend functionality using AWS serverless services
• Develop RESTful APIs and event-driven systems within a microservices architecture
• Optimize existing services for performance and cost efficiency
• Collaborate cross-functionally to integrate backend services with frontend applications
• Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions
• Conduct code reviews and contribute to technical decision-making
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues
• Improve engineering practices for code quality, testing, and monitoring

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend development experience (distributed systems/microservices preferred)
• Strong Java skills and Maven proficiency
• Hands-on experience with AWS serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, Step Functions)
• Experience with event-driven architecture and microservices design
• Experience with DynamoDB (or strong NoSQL foundation and willingness to ramp up quickly)
• Ability to write automated tests for backend services
• Comfortable with Git and GitHub workflows
• Analytical mindset, strong troubleshooting, and effective communication/collaboration

Nice to Have

• Technical depth across additional serverless/cloud services and observability/monitoring practices

Compensation

• Expected annual base salary range: $112,125–$186,875 (bonus eligible)
