Senior Backend Software Engineer (USA Remote)

Role Overview

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will build and evolve backend systems supporting Assignment Workflow core capabilities. You’ll work at scale to deliver meaningful improvements in education technology, collaborating with frontend engineers, designers, and product managers.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend services
• Develop solutions using serverless architecture on AWS (e.g., AWS Lambda)
• Build RESTful APIs and event-driven systems within microservices architecture
• Optimize services for performance and cost-efficiency
• Partner with cross-functional teams to integrate backend services with frontend applications
• Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions
• Perform code reviews and collaborate with other engineers
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues
• Participate in technical discussions that shape product direction

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend development experience (distributed systems or microservices preferred)
• Strong Java skills and Maven proficiency
• Experience with AWS serverless: Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, Step Functions
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and microservices design
• Hands-on experience with DynamoDB (or strong NoSQL foundation and willingness to learn DynamoDB)
• Ability to build automated tests for backend services
• Comfortable with Git and GitHub workflows
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
• Effective communication and collaboration
