Senior Backend Software Engineer

Role overview

SmarterDx is hiring a Senior Backend Software Engineer (full remote, Madrid, ES) to design and build core backend systems for clinical data at scale. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver features, improve architecture and processes, and support production operations while maintaining strong patient privacy and security practices.

Key missions

• Design, build, and launch new backend features for SmarterDx applications, with the ability to contribute across the stack when needed
• Collaborate cross-functionally to understand user needs, iterate on ideas, and maintain high application quality
• Research and advocate for improved techniques, processes, and designs within the team
• Support production: monitoring, troubleshooting, and ensuring reliable application performance

Responsibilities & expectations

• Deliver complex features through incremental, high-value releases with a strong quality bar
• Work on cloud-native distributed systems and event-driven architectures
• Communicate effectively and partner closely with product and engineering stakeholders
• Operate in a security-conscious environment handling sensitive healthcare data

Requirements

• 5+ years of development experience, with focus on backend and cloud-based solutions
• Strong Python expertise
• Familiarity with TypeScript and React
• Experience with Postgres (or similar relational database)
• Experience working with event-driven architectures and distributed cloud systems
• Excellent communication and team collaboration skills

Nice to have

• Experience with Snowflake and dbt
• Experience with Kubernetes
• Experience with ELT pipelines and Airflow
• Experience in health tech, especially hospital billing systems
• Experience working with product managers to plan and iterate on deliverables
• Bachelor’s or Master’s in CS/Engineering (or equivalent experience)
