Senior Backend Software Engineer

Role Overview

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer at Affirm, you will work on core networking and compute infrastructure to ensure reliable request delivery. You’ll lead through ambiguity, collaborate cross-functionally, and help foster a culture of quality and ownership in a remote-first environment.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

• Lead your team in delivering quarterly objectives, guiding engineers through open-ended problems.
• Partner with product management, design, and analytics across the development lifecycle (including ideation and articulating technical constraints).
• Proactively identify and resolve issues across projects, processes, technology, or business impact.

Requirements

• Deep expertise in Kubernetes resource management, Helm charts, and operator patterns, especially for networking workloads.
• Proven experience building highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Demonstrated ownership of growth, proactively seeking feedback from teammates, managers, and stakeholders.
• 4+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• Ability to define technical plans for significant features/system components with elegant, simple, extensible design; write high-quality, maintainable code.
• Owned and operated cloud-native distributed infrastructure in networking or compute.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
