Senior Backend Software Engineer

Role overview

You’ll be a Senior Backend Software Engineer responsible for owning complex feature delivery and technical design for Abnormal Security’s ATO platform. The role combines hands-on backend systems development, production ownership, stakeholder collaboration, and mentorship.

Key missions

• Design, build, and iterate on scalable backend and ML systems, including APIs, frameworks, and internal tools.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to align on specifications, priorities, and roadmap discussions.
• Drive complex projects to completion while ensuring stability, reliability, and operational excellence.
• Mentor peers and share knowledge to influence engineering practices across the team, proposing long-term technical plans.

Responsibilities

• Lead complex technical design and delivery with a senior engineer mindset.
• Maintain production ownership, focusing on system health, monitoring, and incident response.
• Produce and communicate technical design documents and influence adoption across teams.

Requirements

• 7+ years of industry experience, including proven Senior Software Engineer expertise.
• Strong backend proficiency in Python, with experience designing and scaling production systems.
• Proven experience with large-scale system design: resilient, scalable, fault-tolerant applications.
• Familiarity with service-to-service communication (e.g., gRPC, Kafka) and caching (e.g., Redis).
• Strong knowledge of relational databases and modern data storage technologies.
• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm).
• Strong cloud/deployment experience with AWS (e.g., S3, RDS).
• Experience with monitoring and incident response practices.
• Comfortable collaborating in a distributed environment and influencing cross-team goals.

Nice to haves

• GenAI affinity and use of developer productivity tools (e.g., GenAI assistants) to accelerate delivery.
