About the role
Role overview
Senior Backend Game Engineer (DevOps) at a fully remote AAA co-development gaming studio. You’ll design, develop, and maintain scalable multiplayer backend systems and services that enable real-time gameplay and reliable online functionality.
Responsibilities
- Participate in technical design and implementation of backend systems for multiplayer online titles (connectivity and performance).
- Develop and optimize cross-platform authentication, matchmaking, lobby systems, and scalable server orchestration.
- Architect high-performance real-time backend services for multiplayer gameplay using C++, C#, Go (Golang), and Node.js.
- Collaborate with network engineers, gameplay programmers, and DevOps to integrate multiplayer features with minimal latency.
- Profile, optimize, and scale backend services for reliability, extensibility, and cost-effectiveness.
- Build robust API services and microservices architectures for data exchange between game clients and servers.
- Provide development estimates, documentation, and reporting to support project planning.
Requirements
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong programming skills in two or more of: C++, C#, Go (Golang), Node.js (C++ and C# preferred).
- 5+ years of professional backend development experience (preferably game industry).
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and data structures/algorithms (DSA).
- Real-time networking experience with WebSockets, RPCs, REST APIs, gRPC, etc.
- Hands-on experience with matchmaking, player session management, and anti-cheat systems.
- Database expertise with SQL and NoSQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB).
- Microservices architecture experience, including server orchestration and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience working in high-performance, low-latency environments.
Bonus skills
- Modern DevOps practices: CI/CD pipelines and automated infrastructure management.
- Experience with GBaaS (e.g., Azure PlayFab, AccelByte AGS, Heroic Labs Nakama, Pragma).
- Knowledge of online gaming platforms (Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam, Nintendo Network, etc.).
- Understanding of UE5 networking framework and client-server game architecture.
