Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Senior Backend Engineer focused on high-scale, high-reliability backend systems for a multi-tenant, event-driven healthcare platform. You’ll build and scale asynchronous background job processing and distributed system components that power critical clinical, payment, and communication workflows.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain high-performance backend services in Node.js and TypeScript using a modular monolith approach (Express + GraphQL).
• Design and optimize large-scale background job processing (tens of thousands of tasks daily), including throughput, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and fault tolerance.
• Implement event-driven orchestration with Google Cloud Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, and scheduled jobs (App Engine Cron).
• Improve performance via profiling, PostgreSQL query optimization (indexing/query planning), and caching strategies with Redis.
• Design resilient distributed systems for retries, partial failures, outages, and high traffic.
• Build/maintain third-party integrations (payments, messaging, healthcare APIs) with reliability at scale.
• Contribute to infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and GCP services (App Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Secret Manager).
• Implement observability/monitoring (e.g., Cloud Logging, Winston, alerting dashboards) for fast incident response.
• Help ensure secure multi-tenant architecture with strong authentication, RBAC, and data isolation.
• Occasionally support full-stack delivery when needed (Vue 3 + Apollo GraphQL).

Requirements

• 5+ years backend (or full-stack) engineering experience in production environments.
• Proven experience owning building high-throughput, job-heavy backend systems (queues/workers/background processing at scale).
• Strong Node.js and TypeScript experience; solid GraphQL and system design skills.
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems and asynchronous processing.
• Strong PostgreSQL performance tuning (indexing, query planning) and ORM usage (Prisma preferred).
• Experience with messaging/queues (e.g., Pub/Sub, RabbitMQ, SQS, Kafka).
• Familiarity with Redis caching and performance optimization.
• Ability to design for reliability, idempotency, and fault tolerance under load.
• Cloud infrastructure experience (GCP preferred; AWS/Azure transferable).
• Strong debugging and incident response mindset.
• Good communication and ability to work in a remote, async team with high ownership.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Google Cloud Pub/Sub, BigQuery, or Cloud Functions.
• Background in healthcare, fintech, or other regulated high-reliability domains.
• Experience designing multi-tenant SaaS.
• Familiarity with rate limiting, backpressure handling, and degradation strategies.
• Exposure to AI/LLM integrations or data-heavy pipelines.
