Role: Senior Backend Engineer

Location: Remote (U.S.)
Company Stage: Series B (venture-backed)

What you’ll do

• Ramp up on the insurance domain and product architecture with close onboarding support.
• Take high ownership of backend systems and deliver features end-to-end with autonomy.
• Architect, design, and implement event-driven systems using:
  • AWS SQS, Kafka, RabbitMQ (or similar)
• Build and optimize SQL data models for reliability, clarity, and scalability across state-specific regulations.
• Contribute to major initiatives including:
  • New state rollouts
  • Independent agent distribution products
  • Direct-to-consumer feature improvements
• Collaborate with product and engineering leadership on system design, tradeoffs, and long-term architecture.
• Debug and improve bottlenecks, operational workflows, and technical debt across services.
• Participate in planning for complex multi-month efforts (e.g., core rewrites and backward-compatible migrations).

Ideal candidate background

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience.
• U.S.-based and able to work remotely with a highly autonomous team.
• Strong experience building event-driven systems (AWS SQS/Kafka/RabbitMQ or similar).
• Proven ability to independently ship large backend features and make architectural decisions with limited guidance.
• Deep experience designing and optimizing SQL data models.
• Experience building reliable, scalable backend systems in production.

Preferred

• Experience in regulated industries (insurance, healthcare, finance).
• Startup experience, especially in small and fast-moving teams.
• AWS experience.
• Experience with Node.js and TypeScript (primary backend stack).
• Frontend exposure is a plus (not required).
