Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Senior Backend Engineer at Picnic to architect and scale real-time food ordering and operations platforms. The role is high-impact, involving ambiguous, complex systems and close collaboration with product, frontend, mobile, and operations teams.

What You’ll Do

• Write high-quality, well-tested backend code in Java and Go; uphold engineering excellence and software lifecycle practices
• Lead backend initiatives focused on scalability and reliability across domains such as:
  • Food ordering
  • Payments
  • Discounts
  • Loyalty
• Drive engineering with reliability-by-design, observability, and testability
• Design scalable databases; use SQL for data analysis
• Provide technical leadership through mentorship, code reviews, and hands-on collaboration

What We’re Looking For

• Proficiency in backend languages Java and Go
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis)
• Cloud experience with AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
• Understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed systems
• Strong background in backend system design: APIs, data stores, concurrency, and distributed systems
• Ability to partner closely with cross-functional teams (frontend, mobile, product, data, business)
• Passion for building systems that directly support customers and operators

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building web or mobile applications and understanding backend/frontend performance tradeoffs
• Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
• Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices
• Proven track record improving developer productivity via tooling, patterns, or process improvements
