Senior Backend Engineer (Grafana Search & Storage)

Role overview

Senior Backend Engineer working on Grafana’s next-generation storage layer, Unified Storage. You’ll help design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, collaborating in a fully remote team and contributing to Grafana’s open-source culture.

Key missions

• Influence the roadmap and team career objectives.
• Drive projects end-to-end: ideation → requirements → operations → delivery.
• Design, build, operate, and maintain core systems, owning reliability, performance, and availability.
• Contribute to other open-source projects and participate in design discussions.
• Mentor/support other team members.

Responsibilities

• Build clean, robust, performant backend services and storage components.
• Work iteratively: analyze, design modular solutions, deliver MVPs, and gather data/feedback.
• Collaborate and communicate effectively in a remote-first environment.
• Handle complex distributed-systems challenges and break them into short feedback loops.

Requirements

• Experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and idea brainstorming through shipping.
• Demonstrated ability to write maintainable and high-performance software.
• Strong understanding/experience with large distributed systems.
• Go programming language experience.
• Experience developing software for cloud or experience with systems engineering.
• Customer-focused mindset; passion for intuitive products aligned with user needs.
• Familiarity with on-call and performing operations/SRE tasks.
• Prior exposure to Grafana and Prometheus as an operational user (including on-call experience or homelab/hobby usage).
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code concepts.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience operating/maintaining systems with observability tools (Grafana/Prometheus) and participating in SRE-style workflows.
