Senior Backend Engineer (Grafana Search & Storage)

Role Overview

Join Grafana Labs as a Senior Backend Engineer (Grafana Search & Storage). You’ll influence the roadmap, deliver new features, and drive projects from ideation to production operations—while mentoring teammates and contributing to the company’s open-source culture.

Key Missions

• Shape the company roadmap and achieve career goals.
• Design, build, operate, and maintain critical backend systems, with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability.
• Mentor teammates and participate in design discussions and cross-team collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Own backend components from requirements gathering through shipping.
• Develop software that runs reliably in the cloud and/or supports systems engineering work.
• Break down complex challenges into modular solutions and deliver iteratively (MVPs → feedback → progress).
• Collaborate effectively in a fully remote team environment.
• Participate in operational duties such as on-call and SRE-style responsibilities.

Requirements

• Experience with large distributed systems.
• Strong bias toward action; motivated self-starter.
• Proven ability to deliver end-to-end projects from requirements to production.
• Customer-focused mindset and interest in building intuitive products.
• Ability to write clean, robust, performant backend software that others can maintain.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills for remote work.
• Pragmatic approach to analyze, design, build modularly, and iterate with short feedback loops.

Nice-to-Haves

• Solid experience with Go.
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code and on-call/operations.
• Experience as a user of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call) or via homelab projects.
