Senior Backend Engineer

Role overview

Join Grafana Labs as a Senior Backend Engineer working on:

• Grafana Mimir OSS (open-source)
• Grafana Cloud Metrics (hosted metrics across major cloud providers)

You’ll collaborate with other engineers to improve performance and reliability, and help shape and scale a metrics platform used by teams worldwide.

Key missions

• Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of Grafana Mimir OSS and operate Grafana Cloud Metrics.
• Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems with a focus on reliability, performance, and availability.
• Influence the team roadmap and deliver new projects from idea to production.

Responsibilities / required ways of working

• Work effectively in a fully remote environment with strong communication and squad-based collaboration.
• Tackle complex problems by breaking them down to create short feedback loops (analyze → design → build modular solutions → ship MVPs → gather feedback → iterate).

Requirements

• Self-driven experience delivering projects end-to-end (from requirements to shipping).
• Kubernetes experience.
• Ability to write clean, robust, high-performance software that others can maintain.
• Familiarity with observability (metrics, logs, traces) for debugging.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code.
• Solid experience in at least one programming language (Grafana Labs uses Go; Python/C/C++/Rust also translate well).
• Some experience developing software running in the cloud or with systems engineering.
• Experience with queue systems (e.g., Kafka protocol).
• Some experience with on-call responsibilities and operating with a DevOps model.

Nice to have

• Experience as a user of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call) or via homelab projects.
• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or desire to learn.
