Senior Backend Engineer

Role overview

Join Grafana Labs as a Senior Backend Engineer working on Grafana Mimir OSS and Grafana Cloud Metrics. You’ll collaborate with other engineers to improve performance and reliability, and take ownership of the systems you work on in a fully remote environment.

Key missions

• Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of large-scale distributed systems.
• Participate in writing and reviewing PRs and design documents; guide automated deployments.
• Design, build, operate, and maintain mission-critical systems, owning reliability, performance, and availability.

Responsibilities / how you’ll work

• Break down complex problems into modular solutions with short feedback loops (analyze → design → build → iterate).
• Work in a fully remote squad and maintain strong communication.
• Deliver projects end-to-end in a self-driven way (requirements → ideation → shipping).
• Follow a DevOps model, including participating in on-call operations.

Requirements

• Ability to write clean, robust, high-performance backend software that is easy to maintain.
• Familiarity with observability practices (metrics, logs, traces) to debug issues.
• Experience delivering projects from requirements through shipping.
• Some experience with cloud software and/or systems engineering.
• Programming language experience; the team uses Go (Python/C/C++/Rust or similar also counts).
• Experience with Kubernetes.
• Experience with queue systems (e.g., Kafka protocol).
• Experience with Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call or strong personal homelab usage).

Nice to have / additional

• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or strong desire to learn.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
