Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Join Grafana Labs as a Senior Backend Engineer working on Grafana Mimir OSS and helping operate Grafana Cloud Metrics across major cloud providers. You’ll improve performance and reliability of large-scale distributed systems while collaborating with your squad to deliver new features.

Key Missions

• Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of Grafana Mimir OSS and operate Grafana Cloud Metrics.
• Collaborate with engineers to design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems with focus on reliability, performance, and availability.
• Influence the team roadmap and deliver projects from idea to production.

Responsibilities

• Build modular solutions, ship MVPs, and iterate using data and feedback.
• Participate in on-call and follow a DevOps operating model.
• Develop clean, robust, and performant backend systems that others can maintain.

Requirements

• Familiarity with observability systems and when to use metrics, logs, and traces to debug.
• Pragmatic problem-solving: break down complex issues for short feedback loops (analyze, design, build, iterate).
• Experience delivering projects end-to-end (requirements → build ideas → shipping).
• Experience with cloud software and/or systems engineering.
• Solid experience with at least one programming language (Grafana uses Go).
• Strong collaboration and communication in a fully remote environment.
• Experience with Kubernetes.
• Experience with queue systems (e.g., Kafka protocol).
• Hands-on experience using Grafana and Prometheus operationally (including on-call) or via homelab projects.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code.
• Exposure to microservices and distributed systems (or strong desire to learn).

Nice-to-Haves

• Familiarity with additional languages such as Python, C, C++, or Rust.
