Senior Backend Engineer (Grafana Backend Services)

Role overview

You will join the Grafana Backend Services squad and help deliver the best Grafana backend experience for on-prem and cloud customers. The role covers core backend components such as the Grafana Backend API and orchestration infrastructure.

Key missions

• Design, develop, and continuously improve Grafana backend services, including the backend API and Grafana CLI.
• Collaborate to deliver new features; iterate and improve results.
• Influence the team roadmap through active participation in planning and design discussions.
• Mentor and support team members; share ideas and knowledge across squads.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to backend architecture and design decisions.
• Break down complex problems into modular solutions and deliver iterative MVPs.
• Gather data and feedback to continuously improve shipped outcomes.
• Collaborate across teams and support maintainable, high-quality engineering standards.

Requirements

• Strong background in backend development, ideally Go.
• Experience writing clean, robust, performant software that is easy for others to maintain.
• Care about developer and user experience and product quality.
• Ability to take on complex challenges: analyze, design, build modular solutions, and iterate based on feedback.
• Solid understanding of storage solutions, especially relational databases: MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL.
• Experience delivering projects end-to-end from requirements to shipping.
• Ability to mentor junior engineers in a collaborative, asynchronous environment.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with open-source software / open-source companies.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with CI/CD, DevOps, or Developer Efficiency workstreams.
• Operational experience using Grafana and Prometheus.
• Familiarity with on-call responsibilities and SRE/operations tasks.
• Exposure to microservices and distributed systems (or strong desire to learn).
