Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Join GitLab as a Senior Backend Engineer to lead the design and development of a unified, Go-based instrumentation service. This backend system consolidates instrumentation across the company to help inform product decisions by understanding customer usage patterns.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain the unified instrumentation service built with Go
• Ensure the sending, transit, and quality of instrumentation data across the system, guaranteeing data integrity
• Support and train product development teams on how to instrument features using the unified service
• Make strategic architectural decisions for foundational infrastructure
• Manage on-call responsibilities
• Collaborate with research and development teams and other cross-functional stakeholders

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience designing scalable, reliable systems for internal and external customers
• Experience with infrastructure concerns such as:
  • System reliability
  • Performance at scale
  • Data quality
  • Observability
• Experience with instrumentation/analytics/data systems (or similar foundational infrastructure)
• Experience designing and building APIs that other teams integrate with (e.g., REST and/or gRPC)
• Ability to work effectively in cross-functional, collaborative environments
• Proficiency in Go and experience building/maintaining production services

Nice to Have

• Ruby on Rails experience
