About the role
Role Overview
Join GitLab as a Senior Backend Engineer to lead the design and development of a unified, Go-based instrumentation service. This backend system consolidates instrumentation across the company to help inform product decisions by understanding customer usage patterns.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain the unified instrumentation service built with Go
- Ensure the sending, transit, and quality of instrumentation data across the system, guaranteeing data integrity
- Support and train product development teams on how to instrument features using the unified service
- Make strategic architectural decisions for foundational infrastructure
- Manage on-call responsibilities
- Collaborate with research and development teams and other cross-functional stakeholders
Requirements
- Strong backend engineering experience designing scalable, reliable systems for internal and external customers
- Experience with infrastructure concerns such as:
- System reliability
- Performance at scale
- Data quality
- Observability
- Experience with instrumentation/analytics/data systems (or similar foundational infrastructure)
- Experience designing and building APIs that other teams integrate with (e.g., REST and/or gRPC)
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional, collaborative environments
- Proficiency in Go and experience building/maintaining production services
Nice to Have
- Ruby on Rails experience
