Senior Backend Engineer (Ecosystems)

Role Overview

Join Mozilla as a Senior Backend Engineer (Ecosystems) on the Ecosystem Services Team. You’ll build and maintain backend systems, collaborate across teams, and take end-to-end ownership of the services you work on.

Key Missions

• Lead backend development: design, build, and maintain server-side logic for your services.
• Partner with cross-functional teams: work closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver reliable features and ensure backend systems meet product needs.
• Ensure engineering quality: participate in code reviews, and security/privacy reviews.
• Mentor and improve team practices: mentor junior engineers and drive code quality, testing, and process improvements.

Requirements

• Strong engineering judgment; can navigate ambiguity, evaluate trade-offs, and ask for input when needed.
• Proficiency in PostgreSQL + SQL query optimization, including relational schema design and migrations using a query builder such as Knex.
• Shipping quality work: pragmatic focus on reliability and production readiness.
• Hands-on experience with observability/monitoring (e.g., Sentry and Grafana).
• 4+ years of software development with a strong backend focus.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers and improving testing/code quality/process.
• Hands-on DevOps experience on GCP, including Docker-based build/deploy pipelines and comfort operating/troubleshooting services in production (on-call experience is a plus).
• Strong backend engineering experience with Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Rust, including confidence leading backend projects.
• Experience with performance/load testing.
• Experience with IaC such as Terraform and Kubernetes.
• Open-source contributions or personal engineering projects.
• Django experience.
