About the role

Role overview

Join Pyroscope (open-source continuous profiling database behind Grafana Cloud Profiles) as a Senior Backend Engineer. You will lead projects, design and operate core components of a distributed database, and drive operational excellence—while collaborating across Grafana and contributing to open source.

Key missions

Design, build, and operate key components of a distributed database, making informed decisions about performance, cost, and complexity.
Lead projects from idea to delivery, including design, rollout/operations, and customer follow-up.
Collaborate with other Grafana teams to integrate Pyroscope into the Grafana ecosystem and improve user experience.

Requirements

Strong communication and the ability to lead in a fully remote, asynchronous environment through writing, reviews, and shipped code.
Product sense: comfortable discussing with customers, handling ambiguity, and turning fuzzy problems into deliverables (no dedicated PM).
Operational mindset: experience on-call/pager, SRE-style work, or infrastructure as code; reliability as a feature.
Systems programming experience (Pyroscope is written in Go; experience with Go or other systems languages such as Rust/C/C++/Python/Java).
Software craftsmanship: clean, robust, performant code that others can maintain; judgment on when to optimize.
Distributed systems in production: experience building/operating cloud services and running multi-tenant data systems that are fast, reliable, and affordable.
Performance engineering & profiling: flamegraphs, pprof, perf, or similar tooling.
Observability experience: OpenTelemetry or large-scale observability systems.
Multi-tenant SaaS on Kubernetes at scale.
Ability to build APIs for AI/LLM consumers (structured APIs, metadata/discovery endpoints, deterministic outputs).
Experience as an on-call user of Grafana, Prometheus, Pyroscope, or similar (or relevant homelab experience).
Open-source contribution/maintainership and comfort engaging with the community.
Experience working in a fully remote, globally distributed team.

Active engagement with the Grafana/observability community and demonstrated open-source leadership.
