About the role

Role overview

Join Pyroscope (Grafana Labs) as a Senior Backend Engineer. You will own projects end to end, design and operate core components of a distributed profiling database, and drive operational excellence while collaborating across Grafana and contributing to open source.

Responsibilities

Lead projects from concept to rollout: design, delivery, operations, and customer follow-up
Design, build, and operate core distributed database components:
- ingestion
- storage
- query
Drive operational excellence by owning outcomes against concrete SLOs and unit cost targets
Reduce toil through automation
Partner with teams across Grafana and support teammates
Contribute to open source

Requirements

Strong communication and effectiveness in a fully remote, asynchronous environment (lead via writing, reviews, and shipped code)
Curiosity and willingness to challenge the status quo as Pyroscope refines product-market fit
Operational mindset: experience with on-call/pager, SRE-style work, or infrastructure as code; reliability as a feature
Pragmatic delivery: break down complex problems into short feedback loops (analyze → design → MVP → learn → iterate)
Distributed systems experience in production
Systems language experience: Pyroscope is written in Go (experience with Go and/or Rust/C/C++/Python/Java, etc.)
Product sense (talk to customers, handle ambiguity, deliver manageable workstreams; no dedicated PM)
Strong software craftsmanship (clean, robust, performant, maintainable)
Experience with profiling/performance engineering tools (e.g., flamegraphs, pprof, perf)
Experience with OpenTelemetry or large-scale observability systems
Experience operating multi-tenant SaaS infrastructure at scale on Kubernetes
Experience building APIs and services for AI/LLM consumers (structured APIs, metadata/discovery endpoints, deterministic outputs)
Experience contributing to and engaging with open source

Nice-to-haves / Additional signals

Experience as an on-call user of Grafana, Prometheus, Pyroscope, or similar (or via homelab)
Experience working on a fully remote, globally distributed team
