Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Join ClickUp as a Senior Backend Engineer. You’ll turn customer feedback into product and platform improvements, build new architectural foundations, and champion API governance across the engineering organization.

Key Missions

• Improve and integrate customer feedback into API tools and shared services.
• Create and evolve critical distributed systems architecture in collaboration with other teams.
• Defend, design, and maintain API governance through collaboration, automation, and engineering enablement.
• Own integrations within ClickUp’s API Gateway layer and support platform capabilities powering ClickUp’s AI initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Work within an agile engineering team.
• Build and maintain backend services and shared platform components.
• Support and enable AI-related product capabilities (including agent-based systems).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong focus on Developer Experience (DX).
• Solid understanding of CAP theorem and distributed systems design patterns.
• Proficient in Go (Golang) and TypeScript.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong understanding of API standards, design approaches, and integration patterns.
• Strong ownership and accountability.

Nice-to-haves / Additional Expertise

• Experience building shared services and platform capabilities enabling AI and agent-based systems.
• Experience with Kafka and event-driven patterns.
• Experience supporting modern AI technologies, including MCP protocol and standards.
• Pragmatic approach to software design, development, and delivery.
• Experience with Backend for Frontend (BFF) patterns.
