Senior Backend Engineer, Analytics Instrumentation (Golang)

Role overview

Senior Backend Engineer for Analytics Instrumentation within GitLab’s Data Engineering and Monetization (DE&M) group. You will build and evolve a unified data collection platform that consolidates product usage and billing event instrumentation across GitLab, enabling product teams to make evidence-based decisions.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement a unified data collection platform using Golang and supporting infrastructure components.
• Improve instrumentation data emission, transit, and quality; ensure data quality, integrity, and billing accuracy.
• Provide technical guidance for usage billing and instrumentation systems during working hours, including incident handling, root-cause analysis, and restoration.
• Partner with R&D and enterprise data organizations to deliver common solutions and drive cross-stakeholder adoption.
• Make technical choices balancing ease of use for product teams with reliability/correctness for data consumers.
• Mentor engineers via code reviews, design discussions, and technical documentation.

Requirements

• Significant experience building/operating platform or infrastructure systems in production.
• Strong proficiency in Go (Golang) and experience building/maintaining production services.
• Backend engineering experience with ability to design and deliver scalable and reliable systems.

Nice-to-haves (implied by the role focus)

• Experience with Kubernetes, ClickHouse, and NATS for data collection and event processing infrastructure.
