Role Overview

Senior Backend Engineer (AI Product) at ClickUp (Full remote). You will build the backend services and product features that power ClickUp’s next-generation AI capabilities, partnering with AI engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver production-ready implementations.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend APIs, services, and data flows that support AI-focused product features
• Collaborate with AI engineers, product managers, and designers to translate product vision into backend features
• Ensure reliability and quality through observability, incident response, performance optimization, and secure deployments
• Break down product requirements into clean technical implementations and ship iteratively

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience shipping user-facing product features at meaningful scale
• Strong backend fundamentals: API design, service architecture, data modeling, and performance optimization
• AI-native mindset and genuine excitement for agents, LLMs, and AI-powered user experiences
• Experience working directly with or supporting AI/ML systems in production (e.g., model integration, inference pipelines, agent-driven features)
• Product-minded approach focused on real user value

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience building backend features for agent-based or AI-powered product experiences
• Familiarity with LLM integration patterns such as:
  • RAG
  • Function calling
  • Tool use, prompt routing, context management
• Experience with event-driven/asynchronous architectures
• Familiarity with modern AI patterns (e.g., vector databases, model gateways, inference optimization, orchestration frameworks)
• Startup/high-growth background and comfort working in ambiguous, fast-moving environments
• Proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js, Python, or Go
