Senior Applied Researcher (AI/ML)

Role Overview

Senior Applied Researcher (AI/ML) at PointClickCare (full remote). You will apply machine learning and AI to develop and deliver high-value healthcare model systems, working closely with product, clinical informatics, data science, engineering, and healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and deliver high-value AI/ML solutions for healthcare.
• Conduct research and experimentation to select appropriate approaches, algorithms, and evaluation methods.
• Perform end-to-end applied ML work including data collection, cleaning, analysis, model training, and evaluation.
• Build production-ready model systems, including operational considerations for SaaS environments.
• Share knowledge and contribute to a collaborative team culture by helping develop new organizational capabilities.

Requirements

• Senior Applied Researcher with strong applied AI/ML experience, including problem framing, data preparation, model system building, and evaluation.
• Experience building and deploying models on public cloud infrastructure such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Familiarity with version control, CI/CD pipelines, and scaling considerations for production ML systems.
• Experience with large datasets using big data frameworks such as Azure Data Lake, Apache Spark, or Databricks.
• Solid understanding of transformer models and LLM-based approaches, including prompt tuning and PEFT methods such as LoRA or QLoRA using Hugging Face Transformers.
• Experience with modern ML libraries/packages including NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, and LightGBM.
• Ph.D. with 1+ years industry experience, or Master’s with 4+ years industry experience, including at least 1 year directly related to healthcare ML/AI.
• Proficiency with SQL and data engineering for AI/ML applications.
• Demonstrated industry impact through multiple major product releases in a commercial SaaS environment.
• Proficiency in Python (and ideally some experience with Java or other languages).
• Hands-on experience working with healthcare data (e.g., EHR, ADT, clinical notes).
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in distributed teams.

Nice to Have

• Experience with reinforcement learning or RLHF.
• NLP experience such as summarization, extraction, classification, or semantic search.
• Experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and/or agentic frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex).
