About the role
Role Overview
Underdog is seeking a Senior Analytics Engineer to help build the data foundation that powers dashboards, metrics, and product experimentation. You’ll focus on turning raw data into trusted, analysis-ready assets and standardizing metric definitions across the company.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain dbt data models that transform raw data into clean, trusted, analysis-ready assets (e.g., User 360, Contest Fact, Marketing Attribution).
- Implement and manage a semantic layer (dbt MetricFlow, Omni, or equivalent) to standardize key metric definitions.
- Own data quality and reliability by setting up automated testing, monitoring, and alerting.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with analysts and data scientists across Product, Marketing, Finance, and Ops to deliver scalable data models.
- Enable self-service analytics by making models discoverable in tools like Omni, Hex, and Sigma, and by building dashboards and explores.
- Apply analytics engineering best practices, including:
- Git workflows and code review
- CI/CD for dbt
- reusable SQL patterns
- Document metric definitions and business logic in a central data catalog.
Requirements
- 4+ years in analytics engineering, BI, or related data roles.
- Strong SQL and data modeling expertise.
- Proficiency with dbt and modern cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks).
- Experience with semantic layers and BI/metrics tools (Omni, Looker, Sigma, Hex).
- Experience with orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect) and Git-based workflows.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on data quality and reliability.
- Strong communication skills for translating complex models for technical and non-technical partners.
Nice to Haves
- Experience in sports, fantasy, or gaming.
- Background in real-time/streaming analytics.
- Contributions to the dbt community or open-source analytics.
- Familiarity with data observability platforms (Monte Carlo, Elementary).
