About the role
Role overview
Orchard is seeking a Senior Analytics Engineer to rebuild how the business derives trustworthy answers from data. The role focuses on transitioning from a sprawling Looker footprint to a set of certified gold-tier analytics models, backed by a prose-based semantic layer for plain-language questions, while maintaining dashboards for core shared metrics.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end delivery of major initiatives on the analytics platform roadmap (from scoping through production delivery) in partnership with the Director of Platform Product and Data.
- Build and maintain gold-tier transformation models (e.g., dbt) so the broader organization can trust metrics.
- Author and maintain the prose semantic layer, including:
- Markdown documentation of what each model means
- Metric definitions and history
- Known limitations and “landmines”
- Build and tune an LLM-powered query layer including:
- Prompts
- Retrieval
- Evals
- A feedback loop for incorrect answers
- Stand up and tune agent-based monitoring for certified dashboards to detect anomalies and trend shifts; improve alert trustworthiness so executives act on them.
- Set technical direction for analytics at Orchard and guide the transition across stakeholders.
Requirements
- 4+ years in analytics engineering, data engineering, or a hybrid data role, including owning a significant data platform or end-to-end migration.
- Strong dbt and SQL fluency.
- Strong technical opinions on:
- Grain
- Testing
- Documentation
- Limits/assumptions of models
- Experience working with Redshift (or similar warehouse) at scale.
- Experience building useful LLM features on top of your own data.
- Hands-on experience with retrieval or evals is a plus.
- Clear technical writing; able to explain metrics concisely for execs.
- Proven ability to own technical decisions and align stakeholders.
Compensation
- $135k–$180k/year base pay in Colorado. Additional stock options and incentive pay may be offered, plus full benefits.
Location / schedule
- Hybrid in New York headquarters (Tuesday and Wednesday), or fully remote in Austin or Denver.
