Role Overview

Orchard is hiring a Senior Analytics Engineer to rebuild how the business derives trustworthy answers from data. The role focuses on transitioning from a sprawling Looker setup to certified gold-tier models (via dbt) and a prose-based semantic layer that enables stakeholders to ask questions in plain language.

What You’ll Do

Own major initiatives on the analytics platform roadmap end to end (scoping through delivery), and help shape where the roadmap goes next.
Build and productionize new data sources, moving from raw ingest to trusted gold-tier dbt models.
Create and maintain a prose semantic layer, including:
- Markdown documentation of what each model means
- Metric definitions
- Historical decisions that shaped the data
- Known limitations / “landmines”
Build and tune an LLM-powered query layer on top of the models:
- Prompts
- Retrieval
- Evals
- A feedback loop to improve when results are wrong
Stand up analytics agents to monitor certified dashboards for:
- Anomalies
- Trend shifts
- Then tune alerting until executives trust and act on it.

What You’ll Bring

4+ years in analytics engineering, data engineering, or a hybrid data role (including end-to-end ownership or significant data platform ownership/migration).
Deep dbt and SQL fluency.
Strong opinions and experience with:
- Grain
- Testing
- Documentation
- Understanding the limits of analytics models
Experience working with Redshift (or similar data warehouses) at scale.
Experience building something useful with LLMs on your own data.
Comfort with retrieval and/or evals (hands-on experience is a plus).
Clear technical writing; ability to explain metrics in an exec-friendly way.
Proven ability to own technical decisions and align stakeholders across the organization.
Ability to push back when data can’t support desired outcomes.

Location / Work Model

Hybrid in New York headquarters: Tuesday and Wednesday in-office.
Or fully remote: specifically Austin or Denver.
