Senior AI Engineer

Role Overview

Join GitLab as a Senior AI Engineer to build and lead internal AI-powered solutions. This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused initially on Sales, Marketing, and Customer Support, embedding AI into key systems and workflows.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

• Diagnose business problems before building solutions: map workflows, identify constraints, and confirm whether AI is the right intervention.
• Own AI initiatives end-to-end: stakeholder discovery, technical design, implementation, deployment, and ongoing iteration.
• Design, develop, and ship AI solutions quickly, delivering working prototypes in days, not months, with measurable business value.

Required Profile

• Model selection & cost-performance trade-offs
  • Know when a smaller fine-tuned model beats a general-purpose large model.
  • Understand when RAG is appropriate versus expanding context windows.
  • Make principled decisions about capability vs. cost.
• Strong coding skills
  • Build working solutions end-to-end with clean, maintainable code.
  • Debug effectively and deliver production-quality work independently.
  • Comfortable in at least one modern scripting language: Python or JavaScript/TypeScript (or similar).
• LLM / AI technical depth
  • Prompt engineering: system prompts, context window management, multi-turn structuring, output evaluation, and systematic iteration.
  • Agentic architectures: tool use, multi-agent orchestration, human-in-the-loop designs, guardrails, evaluation frameworks, and production-grade reliability.
  • Practical fluency across the LLM ecosystem, including models from Anthropic and OpenAI plus open-source alternatives, with sound selection judgment.
• Systems thinking & diagnostic rigor
  • Identify bottlenecks and root causes before selecting models (“what’s actually blocking flow?”).
• Product mindset
  • Scope MVPs, prioritize, deliver iteratively, and consider adoption, UX, and business outcomes.
• Stakeholder and domain communication
  • Understand stakeholder needs across domains quickly.

Business Systems Knowledge (Nice-to-have / Functional Expertise)

• Enterprise systems such as Salesforce (CRM), Marketo (marketing automation), Zendesk (support), Workato (integration/orchestration), Relevance AI (AI platforms), and Glean (enterprise search/knowledge).
