About the role
Role Overview
The Senior Accountant manages key accounting functions supporting financial operations and regulatory compliance. You will own major areas including payroll accounting, state tax compliance, revenue recognition, grant accounting, and act as a co-owner of the general ledger and month-end close process.
Core Responsibilities
Payroll & Payroll Accounting
- Oversee the bi-weekly payroll process with HR and the payroll provider
- Review payroll accuracy before processing
- Prepare and reconcile payroll-related journal entries
- Reconcile payroll liability and payroll-related balance sheet accounts
- Ensure timely payroll tax filings and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Support payroll audits and year-end reporting (including W-2 preparation and reconciliations)
State Tax Compliance
- Manage state payroll tax registrations for new employee work locations
- Maintain unemployment insurance and withholding/employer account registrations
- Monitor state tax notices and coordinate timely responses
- Ensure ongoing compliance with multi-state payroll tax requirements
- Partner with HR on remote workforce compliance initiatives
Revenue Recognition (ASC 606)
- Prepare monthly revenue recognition calculations in accordance with U.S. GAAP (ASC 606)
- Reconcile revenue-related accounts and investigate variances
- Collaborate with Operations, Revenue Cycle, and FP&A to ensure accurate revenue recording
- Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for monthly close and external audits
- Recommend and implement process improvements to improve accuracy and efficiency
Grant Accounting
- Maintain accounting records for grant-funded programs
- Track grant expenditures vs. approved budgets
- Prepare reimbursement requests and grant financial reports
- Ensure compliance with grant agreements and applicable regulations
- Coordinate grant-related audit requests and documentation
General Ledger Co-Ownership & Close
- Co-own the general ledger with the Controller
- Prepare and review journal entries
- Perform monthly account reconciliations
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities
- Maintain supporting documentation for balance sheet accounts
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and accounting policies
Financial Reporting & Process Improvement
- Support monthly financial statements and management reporting packages
- Assist with annual financial statement audits and tax return preparation
- Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting processes
- Develop and maintain accounting procedures and documentation
- Participate in special projects and system implementations as assigned
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP
- Experience in payroll accounting and multi-state payroll tax compliance
- Experience with revenue recognition (ASC 606)
- Experience preparing account reconciliations and journal entries
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Nice to Have
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Grant accounting experience
- Experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or a high-growth startup environment
- ERP/accounting system experience (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct)
- Experience working with outsourced payroll providers (e.g., ADP, Rippling, Gusto)
