About the role
Security Engineer Intern (Summer Internship)
Join Calix’s Security Engineering team for a 90-day, full-time remote summer internship in the United States or Canada.
What you’ll do
- AI-driven security research & POCs: Research, design, and implement proof of concepts for AI platforms, tools, and services.
- Detection & Response: Explore how AI can define and tune detection capabilities to identify malicious activity in cloud environments.
- Threat Modeling & Vulnerability Management: Evaluate how AI can remediate risks early and reduce vulnerability exploitation.
- Automation & Scripting: Assess how AI can automate security processes to reduce manual work and improve efficiency.
- Cloud & Infrastructure Security: Determine how AI can secure public cloud and hybrid infrastructures while supporting compliance.
- Security Operations: Use AI to analyze complex logs in real time to detect previously unseen attacks.
- Documentation: Document all research and POCs and deliver a final recommendation report for each AI tool/service investigated.
Required qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
- Foundational knowledge of OS internals (Linux/Windows), network protocols (TCP/IP), and cloud security principles.
- Scripting ability in a modern language (Python preferred, also PowerShell/Bash).
- Hands-on experience via labs/projects or security CTFs.
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills; eager to learn in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work the full summer break (May–August or June–September).
Preferred qualifications
- Familiarity with security tools such as SIEM, EDR, Wireshark, Nessus, Splunk.
- Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Security+.
Pay
- San Francisco Bay Area: 27.60–34.50 USD/hour
- All other US locations: 24.00–30.00 USD/hour (Exact pay depends on location and other factors shared during recruitment.)
