About the role

Role Overview

Research Associate at CarbonPlan supporting research that informs climate impacts and climate solutions, especially at the intersection of climate risk and affordability.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in research on climate impacts, including at least one of:
    • Climate risk modeling and the private risk analytics industry
    • Wildfire adaptation and mitigation
    • Scoping potential new work
  • Contribute to research articles, tools, blog posts, and scientific journal articles
  • Support efforts to engage media, research, and decision-making communities
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and external partners to scope and implement projects informing decision-making

Requirements

  • Strong passion for the mission
  • Degree or training in Earth/environmental sciences, data science, statistics, economics, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication (non-academic experience acceptable)
  • Experience conducting interdisciplinary and/or policy-relevant research
  • Data analysis experience and attention to detail
  • Scientific programming experience (e.g., Python) or equivalent coding experience
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines while working remotely
  • Curiosity, collegiality, and comfort working in cross-functional environments

Nice to Have

  • Experience working directly on climate risk modeling or adaptation
  • Experience with the political economy of climate change and science-to-decision boundaries
  • Experience with academic research and publication processes
  • Scientific Python, Jupyter notebooks, and related tooling
  • Git/GitHub and experience with testing frameworks
  • Experience with open source software development

Reporting & Team

  • Reports to Grayson Badgley (Research Scientist) and works with a collaborative interdisciplinary team.
