About the role
Role Overview
Kentro is seeking an Application Performance Monitoring (APM) Manager to lead enterprise-scale monitoring operations supporting the Veteran’s Administration. You will oversee two teams—Instrumentation Engineering & Sustainment (IES) and Monitoring Architecture & Standards (MAS)—to provide full-stack performance visibility across ~800 applications and supporting infrastructure.
This role is responsible for improving application reliability and end-to-end service health by enabling proactive detection, reducing MTTx (MTTD/MTTA/MTTE), improving telemetry quality, and aligning monitoring workflows with incident management and SRE practices.
Responsibilities
Lead & mentor IES team responsible for deploying, maintaining, and optimizing monitoring instrumentation across ~800 applications and networked systems.
Ensure high-quality telemetry across metrics, logs, traces, and events for end-to-end visibility.
Improve alert fidelity using smart thresholds, correlation, anomaly detection, and AIOps.
Oversee intake and triage of ~8,000 monitoring alerts/day, ensuring accurate prioritization and escalation.
Continuously improve signal-to-noise via tuning, automation, and root-cause reduction.
Direct MAS team for monitoring platform operations, observability architecture, standards, and AI-driven analytics.
Define and enforce enterprise monitoring best practices, instrumentation patterns, and telemetry governance.
Partner with engineering, application owners, and infrastructure teams to ensure consistent, scalable observability.
Lead integration of APM capabilities with incident management, dashboards, SLO/SLA reporting, and service health analytics.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electronics engineering, or related technical field (or 8+ years substituting for education).
- 15+ years in IT operations, service reliability, enterprise monitoring, or incident management, including 5+ years managing operations teams.
- Experience overseeing service delivery to a federal client.
- Experience leading multi-site IT operations and diverse operational teams.
- Strong background in ITIL, event/incident management, and customer support operations.
- Demonstrated history of collaboration, flexibility, and delivering innovative solutions in complex enterprise environments.
