Reliability Engineer (Remote)

Role overview

As a Reliability Engineer, you will help ensure the resilience and availability of Kohl’s systems and applications. You’ll partner with development teams to review designs, run risk assessments, and implement monitoring, failover, and continuous reliability improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead incident response efforts, perform root cause analysis (RCA), and implement preventative measures.
  • Establish reliable operational practices through automation and process improvements.
  • Drive reliability, observability, and efficiency throughout the software lifecycle across product teams (within an assigned domain).
  • Identify repeated toil and opportunities for automation and risk reduction.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and run blameless retros / continuous improvement.
  • Proactively identify failures using chaos engineering (edge cases, failure modes, design review).
  • Advise on capacity planning and continuously assess system behavior and resource consumption.
  • Work with product managers to plan and prioritize reliability best practices using SLIs/SLOs and error budgets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in MIS, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in software development.
  • Strong programming skills in one or more of: Java, Python, Go, or Node.js.
  • Working knowledge of systems architecture, operating system internals, and network fundamentals.
  • Experience with at least one cloud platform: AWS, GCP, or Azure.

Nice to have

  • Monitoring experience with tools such as CloudWatch, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Tracing.
  • Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration, e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Rancher.
