About the role
Role: Python Engineer (General Track)
Canonical is hiring Python engineers across teams and levels. This role focuses on building high-quality, idiomatic Python software for Ubuntu-related services, utilities, tools, and production processes—often in distributed and cloud/Kubernetes environments.
What you’ll do
- Write high-quality, well-designed, well-tested Python software
- Collaborate proactively with a globally distributed team
- Provide technical leadership within Canonical and the open-source community
- Debug issues and ship high-quality code fixes
- Contribute to technical documentation
- Work from home, with global travel twice a year for company events
What we’re looking for
- Strong academic background and/or a compelling alternative path
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM (or equivalent experience)
- Drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond
- Organized, self-starting, able to deliver on schedule
- Professional communication with colleagues, partners, and community
- Experience writing modern, maintainable Python
- Attention to detail and a conscientious approach to performance
- Professional written and spoken English
- Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability
- Ability to travel twice a year (up to two weeks)
Additional skills (nice to have)
- Container technologies: LXD, Docker, Kubernetes
- Build systems/toolchains (incl. cross-compilation)
- Other languages: Golang or Rust, and/or C/C++
- Strong quality/test engineering
- Web or Flutter frontend experience
- API experience with REST and gRPC
