About the role

Role: Python Engineer (General Track)

Canonical is hiring Python engineers across teams and levels. This role focuses on building high-quality, idiomatic Python software for Ubuntu-related services, utilities, tools, and production processes—often in distributed and cloud/Kubernetes environments.

What you’ll do

Write high-quality, well-designed, well-tested Python software
Collaborate proactively with a globally distributed team
Provide technical leadership within Canonical and the open-source community
Debug issues and ship high-quality code fixes
Contribute to technical documentation
Work from home, with global travel twice a year for company events

What we’re looking for

Strong academic background and/or a compelling alternative path
Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM (or equivalent experience)
Drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond
Organized, self-starting, able to deliver on schedule
Professional communication with colleagues, partners, and community
Experience writing modern, maintainable Python
Attention to detail and a conscientious approach to performance
Professional written and spoken English
Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability
Ability to travel twice a year (up to two weeks)

Additional skills (nice to have)

Container technologies: LXD, Docker, Kubernetes
Build systems/toolchains (incl. cross-compilation)
Other languages: Golang or Rust, and/or C/C++
Strong quality/test engineering
Web or Flutter frontend experience
API experience with REST and gRPC
