About the role
Role Overview
Senior Python Backend Engineer focused on shipping AI-powered features in production (not research). This is a contract role, remote (US), building reliable backend services and REST APIs that real users depend on.
Responsibilities
- Design and build Python backend services and REST APIs for production applications
- Integrate LLMs and AI APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic) into real workflows and existing systems
- Own reliability: error handling, edge cases, and performance
- Write clean, testable code with proper version control, peer reviews, and Agile practices
- Work with SQL databases and optimize queries for production workloads
- Collaborate with engineering and non-technical stakeholders
- Occasionally interface with .NET/C# systems within a broader stack
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong hands-on Python backend development (APIs, microservices, production systems)
- Proven experience integrating LLMs/AI APIs into deployed applications
- Solid C# / .NET (including .NET Core)
- Strong SQL skills with relational databases
- Experience with API microservices architecture and object-oriented design
- Testing mindset: unit tests, code reviews, and data-driven validation
- Clear communicator; can work independently and in a small Agile team
Nice to Have
- Cloud experience, ideally Azure
- Familiarity with ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn)
- Background in data/ML engineering
What This Role Is Not
- Not a data science/research role (no model experimentation, analytics dashboards, or Jupyter-notebook-focused work).
Logistics
- Remote (US) with a short onsite onboarding visit in San Francisco (2–3 days)
- C2H (1099) contract structure
- Compensation: competitive with the Canadian market, based on experience
