Python Backend Engineer - Remote

Role overview

Contract Python Backend Engineer (remote) to help train and evaluate next-generation AI systems via real-world software engineering tasks. You’ll work on challenging backend/full-stack/systems problems, adapting quickly to unfamiliar codebases and explaining your engineering decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Perform backend, full-stack, infrastructure, and systems-related engineering tasks
• Review, debug, and improve code across different technical environments
• Design or evaluate solutions involving APIs, databases, services, integrations, testing, and deployment workflows
• Assess tradeoffs across scalability, maintainability, performance, reliability, security, and developer experience
• Communicate technical reasoning clearly in writing (what works, why, and alternatives)
• Collaborate with the customer’s team on technical reviews and implementation decisions
• Adapt rapidly to new codebases, frameworks, and technical requirements

Required skills & qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
• Strong backend or full-stack experience (Python preferred) and/or experience with one or more: JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Go, Ruby, PHP
• Experience building/maintaining/reviewing production applications, APIs, services, databases, or integrations
• Strong fundamentals: debugging, testing, code quality, architecture, and technical tradeoffs
• Ability to explain complex engineering decisions clearly and objectively
• Comfortable reading and reasoning through unfamiliar code/requirements

Preferred qualifications

• Cloud experience: AWS, GCP, or Azure
• CI/CD, DevOps workflows, containers, monitoring, or production operations
• Frontend experience: React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or React Native
• Open-source contributions/public GitHub, technical writing, or strong examples of past work
• Experience mentoring engineers, reviewing code, or making architecture decisions
