About the role
Role Overview
As a Product Designer on Toast’s Point of Sale (POS) team, you’ll design the core experiences that power restaurant operations. You’ll turn complex service workflows into fast, intuitive, and reliable interfaces for servers, bartenders, and front-of-house staff—across Toast’s terminal and handheld surfaces.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end design for POS experiences, from early discovery and concepts to high-fidelity execution with strong autonomy.
- Translate operational workflows—order taking, modifications, payments, splits, and voids—into error-resistant experiences that are easy to learn on the fly.
- Design for high-pressure, time-sensitive restaurant environments where users can’t pause to read instructions.
- Partner with Product, Engineering, and Research to define how POS capabilities work across devices, balancing technical constraints and user needs.
- Produce polished high-fidelity artifacts covering edge cases, hardware contexts, and varied restaurant service styles.
- Build alignment early using prototypes and storytelling, communicating tradeoffs clearly.
- Champion server/front-of-house needs to ensure speed, clarity, and reliability are maintained.
- Participate in design critiques and collaborate with the team.
- Integrate AI-first tools and methods to accelerate exploration and execution.
Requirements
- Ability to use data, business metrics, and user research to support design decisions and drive impact.
- Strong design excellence with a portfolio showing attention to detail, edge cases, and real-world constraints.
- Demonstrated collaboration and stakeholder management; ability to navigate and influence cross-functionally.
- Strong problem-solving for ambiguous problems and ability to map complex workflows into intuitive end-to-end user journeys.
- Instinct for speed and reliability: reducing friction rather than adding features.
- AI-first design approach for conceptual prototyping, plus strong visual design to craft polished multi-surface journeys.
- 3+ years of product design with progression toward owning broader outcomes.
- Include a portfolio link in the application.
Nice to Haves
- Experience designing across multiple surfaces/devices and accounting for hardware contexts and varied restaurant types (implied by responsibilities and focus of the role).
