About the role

Role Overview

You’ll be a Product Designer and an early, founding designer at Chalk. You will help define how engineers, data scientists, and ML practitioners interact with Chalk’s web and CLI tools, shaping the product and Chalk’s visual language, interaction patterns, and design standards from the ground up.

What You’ll Do

Collaborate with engineers and founders to understand the problem space, define requirements, prototype solutions, and ship polished experiences (no product managers).
Own UI/UX end-to-end, from concept to high-fidelity mocks and through implementation.
Gather feedback from peers and users (primarily engineers and data scientists) to validate designs and iterate quickly.
Balance speed and polish with pragmatic trade-offs to ship fast and learn.
Help start and grow the design system (components, patterns, principles) as the team scales.
Ship implementation-ready designs within your first 7 days.

What We’re Looking For

5+ years of full-time design experience.
Portfolio showcasing shipped work.
Comfort designing for an engineering persona with enough technical literacy to discuss APIs, data flows, and constraints.
Collaborative, low-ego mindset and openness to feedback.
Strong communication: clearly articulate decisions and ask clarifying questions.
Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment with “just enough process” and without formal PM structure.
Fluency in Figma.

Bonus Points

Experience designing for developer tools or data-heavy B2B products.
Familiarity with SQL, Python, data engineering, or ML workflows.
Some front-end code exposure (HTML/CSS, React, or TypeScript).
