About the role

Role Overview

Product Design Lead (remote-first) Lead a small, high-calibre product design team shaping the core merchant experience inside a complex payments platform. This is a hands-on leadership role blending design vision, systems thinking, and direct craft work in environments with conditional, stateful, and operationally critical flows.

Responsibilities

Own design vision, execution quality, and team development for a critical product domain
Define and maintain the end-to-end experience strategy and a design quality bar
Lead, mentor, and grow a small team of product designers via critique, coaching, and hands-on collaboration
Contribute directly to product design; spend a significant portion of time in the tools solving high-impact problems
Partner with Product and Engineering to shape roadmap direction and product decisions
Lead user research across multiple personas and translate insights into product direction
Strengthen and extend the design system by identifying gaps and building reusable patterns/components
Navigate trade-offs between ideal UX, technical constraints, and operational realities
Build and evolve design processes, critique standards, and delivery practices to enable high-velocity, high-quality work

Requirements

Strong experience designing and leading work on complex, systems-heavy products
Comfortable with autonomy and high-stakes decisions in ambiguous environments
Proven experience designing and shipping complex SaaS/fintech/infrastructure/developer-focused products
Experience leading or mentoring product designers (formal or informal)
Strong craft across interaction design, visual design, and information architecture
Ability to own a product domain end-to-end from ambiguity through shipped outcomes
Ability to collaborate closely with Product and Engineering in a highly autonomous environment
Strong systems thinking and comfort in technically complex environments

Nice to Have

Payments, financial systems, or regulated domains experience
Experience contributing to or scaling a design system
