About the role

Role Overview

Product Counsel (ERISA & Operations) at Human Interest will serve as the in-house ERISA and compliance expert for the company’s 401(k) recordkeeping platform. You’ll provide real-time legal guidance to customer-facing teams and partner with product and operations to ensure compliance and drive product improvements.

Key Missions

Act as front-line legal counsel for Customer Support/Customer Care, answering ERISA/IRC/fiduciary questions in a practical and timely manner.
Serve as the ERISA expert for Product, translating ERISA and IRC requirements into actionable guidance for product managers and engineers.
Monitor legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments impacting qualified retirement plans and advise Operations, Support, and Product on relevant changes to the platform.

Responsibilities

Translate ERISA/IRC and fiduciary obligations into operationally usable guidance for automated workflows and payroll integrations.
Provide business-minded legal advice with strong practical judgment on complex, time-sensitive plan administration matters.
Use AI tools in legal work to accelerate research, drafting, summarization, and analysis, while maintaining substantive legal judgment.
Communicate complex legal issues clearly in writing and meetings for cross-functional audiences.

Requirements

Bar admission (or other authorization to practice law, e.g., registered in-house status) in any state and in good standing.
Deep ERISA expertise, especially:
- Fiduciary duty
- Prohibited transaction rules
- Qualified plan rules under the IRC governing 401(k) recordkeeping and fiduciary services
Proven experience providing ERISA advice in operational and product contexts.
Ability to partner cross-functionally with product, engineering, and operations; explain issues clearly and produce regulator-scrutinized written work (product guidance, decision documents, legal analyses).
Practical familiarity with qualified plan operational compliance, including EPCRS and related correction principles (as applicable).
Familiarity with AI tools used daily in legal work (research/drafting/analysis).
