About the role

Role Overview

Join Upstart as a Principal Technical Program Manager (full remote). You will drive execution of critical engineering initiatives, improve engineering velocity, strengthen operational excellence, and enhance Upstart’s machine learning advantage. The role sits at the intersection of product and engineering, delivering complex outcomes across multiple teams and systems.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

Own system-level outcomes for critical cross-team initiatives
Bring clarity to ambiguity by aligning objectives, defining key milestones, and translating high-level designs into implementation details
Proactively identify and mitigate risks early to reduce delivery risk
Drive critical decisions and partner closely with engineering and product leaders
Influence adoption of new processes, tools, and engineering standards across organizations
Improve engineering velocity through improvements in tooling, automation, and AI-based solutions

Requirements

8+ years in technical program management, product management, or related roles in software engineering
Experience leading large-scale, cross-functional programs spanning multiple engineering teams and systems
Ability to lead complex technical initiatives from concept through launch, including:
- Defining scope
- Defining success metrics
- Execution strategy
Experience with distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, and system design at scale
Strong judgment and prioritization skills; can navigate technical/business trade-offs
Excellent written and verbal communication; can explain complex technical topics to diverse audiences
Proven ability to influence senior and executive stakeholders on ambiguous, high-impact initiatives
BA/BS in CS, Engineering, Mathematics (or equivalent practical experience)
