Principal Software Engineer

Role Overview

Versant Media is seeking a Principal Software Engineer (Frontend) to lead the design and delivery of next-generation digital experiences for the CNBC brand. The role combines technical leadership, architectural influence, and hands-on engineering to improve frontend effectiveness and user impact.

Responsibilities

• Build, test, review, and ship software across web frontends and related platform services (including APIs and microservices).
• Drive collaboration on system architecture, including data models, data flows, schemas, and API contracts.
• Facilitate cross-platform engineering discussions to ensure consistency, efficiency, and alignment across a multi-stack team.
• Lead and participate in code reviews to improve quality and guide team decisions.
• Influence and refine technical strategy and architectural principles for the organization.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, scope, and ship user-impacting features.
• Work with backend and component library teams to ensure strong integration and high trust across groups.
• Improve delivery efficiency through unit test coverage, partnering with QA on test automation, and reducing tech debt.
• Write and refine developer documentation to improve DX and onboarding.
• Define and champion long-term engineering goals, including engineering principles for developer experience, performance, and user satisfaction.
• Mentor engineers, providing technical guidance and supporting growth.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional frontend development experience.
• Strong understanding of core programming principles and design patterns.
• Proven ability to write tests and improve test quality and coverage.
• Comfortable using Git, Jenkins, and Jira.
• Ability to leverage build tools for cross-team module sharing and third-party module integration.
• Fluency with CI/CD pipelines for mobile/native apps.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to address technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with contemporary backend development platforms, including cloud services, container technologies, and serverless.
• Experience with web technologies, hybrid apps, or native integration of web apps.
• Mobile-first mindset focused on accessibility, page optimization, and/or SEO.
• Demonstrated success in cross-functional teams.
